How Afghan Students Can Apply to Turkish Universities in 2026–2027

Step-by-step guide for Afghan students applying to Turkish universities for 2026–27: shortlist, requirements, offers, student visa and registration.

Checked against official sources on 19 October 2026. Requirements, fees and dates change and can differ by university, embassy or consulate. Always confirm the current rules with the official source before you apply — we do this for every student we work with.

Applying to a Turkish university from Afghanistan is very manageable if you understand one thing first: there is no single national application for international students. Each university runs its own admission process for foreign applicants, with its own requirements, quotas and deadlines. This guide walks through the process in the order you will actually do it.

Step 1: Decide what you want to study and at what level

Start with the programme, not the university. Are you applying for a bachelor's degree after grade 12, or a master's after your first degree? Do you want to study in English or Turkish? Your answers decide which universities are realistic and which documents and tests you will need.

If you are unsure about language, read our guide to English-taught programmes in Türkiye. For level-specific requirements, see bachelor's admission and master's admission.

Step 2: Check your passport and documents early

Many delays begin with documents, not applications. Before you apply:

  • Check that your passport is valid well beyond your planned start date. Renewing it later in the process causes problems.
  • Collect your diploma and transcripts. For a bachelor's degree, this means your grade 12 documents. For a master's, it means your bachelor's documents.
  • Check that your name and date of birth are spelled identically on every document.

Our documents checklist lists what you need at each stage.

Step 3: Build a shortlist using official information

For each programme, check on the university's official international admissions page:

  • Which qualifications and exams it accepts, such as high school grades, TR-YÖS, the university's own YÖS exam or the SAT
  • Minimum scores and language requirements
  • Application dates and fees
  • Tuition fees for international students

TR-YÖS is the international student exam run by ÖSYM, Türkiye's national assessment centre. Many universities accept it, but not all require an exam. Some admit international students on high school grades alone. Read more in Turkish university entrance exams explained.

A balanced shortlist usually includes a few ambitious choices and a few safer ones. Also consider state and foundation universities and different cities, not only Istanbul.

Step 4: Apply within each university's window

Most programmes start in September or October, and some universities also admit students for a February start. Application windows for autumn entry often open in the first half of the year. Some close early, while others stay open until places are filled. Submit each application carefully. Upload clear scans, and keep a record of every login, application number and payment receipt.

Step 5: Understand your offer

An offer may be conditional or unconditional. A conditional offer asks you to meet a requirement first, such as final grades or a language score. Read the conditions and deadlines carefully. To confirm your place, follow the university's official payment instructions and pay only through its published channels. The university then issues the acceptance letter you need for your visa.

Step 6: Apply for your student visa

Afghan citizens need a visa to study in Türkiye. Study visas are issued by Turkish embassies and consulates; the online e-Visa is only for tourism and commerce. You complete the official pre-application, attend an appointment and submit your documents. Our full Turkish student visa guide explains each step.

Step 7: Register and apply for your residence permit

After you arrive, you complete final registration at the university with your original documents. Undergraduate students generally also need a high school equivalence certificate (denklik). You must then apply for a student residence permit. See our residence permit guide.

A realistic timeline

When (before an autumn start) What to do
9–12 months Choose your field and level; check passport and documents
6–9 months Shortlist programmes; take any tests; prepare translations
4–8 months Submit applications; follow up on results
After an offer Meet conditions; confirm your place
2–4 months Student visa application
On arrival Registration and residence permit

This is a planning guide. Always follow each university's official dates.

Questions students ask

Is there one central application for Turkish universities?

Not for most international students. You apply to each university directly through its own international admissions process. Türkiye Scholarships is the main exception, with its own central application.

Can I apply while I am still in grade 12?

Often yes. Many universities accept final-year students and make a conditional offer that becomes final when you submit your diploma and results.

How long does the whole process take?

Plan for 9–12 months from your first research to arriving in Türkiye, especially for the autumn intake. The visa stage alone can take several weeks.
