Choosing a university

Turkish Universities for Afghan Students: How to Choose

A practical framework for choosing between Turkish universities: state or foundation, English or Turkish, city, cost and recognition, so your shortlist fits your goals and not just a ranking table.

Fact-checked 19 October 2026 Updated

State and foundation universities

Türkiye has two main types of university, both overseen by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK):

International tuitionSet by each university within government limitsSet by the university's board of trustees

DiscountsLess commonMerit-based discounts are common

These are general patterns. Individual universities differ, so always check the university's own rules.

Turkish private universities for Afghan students

Turkish private universities are officially called foundation universities. Many Afghan students consider them because they often have more English-taught programmes, longer application windows and merit-based tuition discounts. They are overseen by the same Council of Higher Education (YÖK) as state universities. When comparing private universities, look beyond the discount headline: check the full fee for every year, whether the discount continues after the first year, and the language and location of the specific programme.

Six questions to ask before you shortlist

  1. Does the programme match your career plan? Look at the curriculum, not just the programme name.
  2. Which language is it taught in? English, Turkish or mixed. Will you need a preparatory year?
  3. Do you meet the entry requirements? Check grades, exams and language scores on the university's international admissions page.
  4. What is the total cost? Include tuition for every year (and the prep year), plus living costs in that city.
  5. Where is it? Large cities offer more opportunities but cost more. Smaller university cities can be quieter and cheaper.
  6. Will your degree be recognised where you plan to work? If you plan to return to Afghanistan or work elsewhere, check the recognition rules there before you enrol.

Use rankings carefully

International rankings measure mostly research output and reputation. They say little about the teaching quality of a specific programme, its fit with your goals, or your chance of admission. Use them as one input among many.

Red flags

  • An institution you cannot find on the official Study in Türkiye or YÖK websites
  • "Guaranteed admission" offers that ignore your grades and documents
  • Requests to pay fees to a personal account

How we build your shortlist

We start from your goals, grades, language level and budget, then compare programmes using the universities' official information. We do not claim special partnerships with universities, and we recommend universities because they fit you, not because of who they are. Questions

Frequently asked questions

What are the best universities in Turkey for Afghan students?

There is no single best university. It depends on your programme, grades, language and budget. A university that is excellent for engineering may not suit a business student. We build a personal shortlist based on official information.

What is a foundation university?

A non-profit private university established by a foundation and overseen by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). Its fees are set by its board of trustees.
