In short: Afghan passport holders need a student visa from a Turkish embassy or consulate; the e-Visa cannot be used for study. You need an acceptance letter, a valid passport, proof of funds and the mission's other documents, and you apply through the official pre-application and appointment system. Who needs a Turkish student visa?

This guide covers the Turkey student visa for Afghan students who have been accepted, or are applying, to a Turkish university. According to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, holders of ordinary Afghan passports need a visa to enter Türkiye. The online e-Visa is only valid for tourism or commerce. For other purposes, including study, visas are issued by Turkish embassies and consulates, so you must apply in advance for a student (education) visa.

Before you can apply, you normally need an acceptance letter from a Turkish university. That is why the admission process comes first. See how Turkish university admission works.

Where to apply: Turkish missions generally handle applications from people who live in the area they serve. Afghans who live legally in another country, such as Pakistan or Iran, usually apply there. Arrangements for applicants in Afghanistan have changed several times in recent years, so confirm with the mission where you intend to apply before you book anything. We help students check this as part of their file preparation.

Turkey student visa requirements for Afghan nationals

The requirements below are the documents usually requested from Afghan applicants. The mission where you apply sets the final list, but expect to be asked for most of the following:

  • Passport. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises at least six months' validity from your date of arrival, and Turkish law requires validity of at least 60 days beyond your permitted stay. For a degree programme, renew a passport that will expire soon before you apply.
  • Visa application form, completed through the official pre-application system, and your appointment confirmation.
  • Recent passport photographs that meet the mission's specification.
  • Acceptance (admission) letter from the Turkish university, showing the programme and its duration.
  • Proof of financial means, such as bank statements or a sponsor's letter with supporting evidence, showing you can pay tuition and living costs.
  • Proof of tuition payment or a deposit, if the university's offer or the mission requires it.
  • Travel or health insurance, if requested.
  • Academic documents, such as your diploma and transcripts, with translations and legalisation where required.
  • Visa fee, paid as the mission instructs.

Our documents checklist covers what you need for the university, for registration and for the visa in one place.

How to apply for a Turkey student visa, step by step

The Turkey student visa process for Afghan students usually follows these steps:

  1. Get your acceptance letter from the Turkish university and read its conditions carefully.
  2. Confirm the mission and its checklist. Find out which Turkish embassy or consulate will take your application and download its current requirements.
  3. Complete the visa pre-application on the official Turkish consular website, konsolosluk.gov.tr. Many missions also use it for appointments. Check every detail against your passport letter by letter.
  4. Book an appointment through the official channel only. No person or company can sell you a guaranteed or faster appointment outside the official system.
  5. Attend your appointment in person with original documents and copies. Some applicants are asked to give biometrics or attend an interview.
  6. Wait for the decision and follow the mission's instructions for collecting your passport.
  7. Travel and register. After arriving in Türkiye, register with your university and apply for your student residence permit within the required period.

Appointments

Appointment availability is controlled by the Turkish authorities and the official booking system. We do not publish appointment dates or waiting times because they change constantly and differ by mission. Be wary of anyone who asks for money to "reserve" an appointment or promises special access. Report suspected fraud to the mission.

Possible interview

You may be asked questions about your study plans, your chosen programme and university, how you will pay for your studies, and your educational background. Answer honestly and consistently with your documents. We hold practice sessions so that students feel prepared, but we never script false answers.

Processing time

There is no single processing time you can rely on. It depends on the mission, the season and your individual file, and it can be longer before the autumn semester when many students apply. Apply as soon as your acceptance letter and documents are ready, and plan your travel only after your visa is issued.

Common application mistakes

  • Inconsistent personal details. Names, dates of birth or spellings differ between the passport, tazkira, diplomas and translations.
  • Weak or unclear financial evidence. Statements with unexplained large deposits, or sponsor letters without proof of the sponsor's income.
  • Passport validity that is too short for the length of the programme.
  • Missing translations or legalisation of academic documents.
  • Applying before admission is confirmed, or with an offer whose conditions have not been met.
  • Using unofficial "agents" for appointments or documents.
  • Submitting false or altered documents. This leads to refusal and can lead to longer-term consequences. We refuse to work with altered documents.

If your application is refused

Visa decisions belong to the Turkish authorities, and refusal letters may not explain every reason in detail. If you are refused, do not re-apply with the same file. Review your documents honestly, especially your finances, the consistency of your personal details and your study plan, and correct real weaknesses before you apply again. We can review a refused file with you and explain your options, but no one can overturn a decision on your behalf.

After you arrive: residence permit and insurance

A student visa lets you enter Türkiye. To stay for your studies, you must also apply for a student residence permit through the Presidency of Migration Management's e-İkamet system. The application can only be made after you have entered Türkiye. Turkish universities commonly tell new international students to apply within 30 days (one month) of arrival. Follow your university's international office instructions exactly.

Valid health insurance is required for the residence permit. Many universities also advise international students to register for the state General Health Insurance (GSS) with the Social Security Institution (SGK) within three months of first registering at the university. Read our residence permit guide.
