Who can apply for a PhD in Türkiye?
Most doctoral programmes require a relevant bachelor's and master's degree, and many specifically ask for a master's with thesis. Some universities run integrated programmes that admit outstanding bachelor's graduates directly, with stricter requirements. Check whether your master's degree meets the programme's rules before you apply.
Typical requirements
- Degrees and transcripts for your bachelor's and master's, with a minimum GPA set by the programme
- An entrance exam score: many programmes ask for ALES (Türkiye's graduate entrance exam, run by ÖSYM), while others accept the GRE from international applicants or exempt applicants from abroad. Rules differ by university and department.
- Language proficiency: an accepted English score for English-taught programmes, or Turkish for Turkish-taught programmes
- A research proposal or statement of purpose explaining what you want to research and why
- Reference letters, usually from academics who supervised your work
- An interview or written exam held by the department, in many cases
What a Turkish PhD involves
Doctoral study in Türkiye generally combines coursework, a qualifying exam and a dissertation based on original research, which you defend at the end. The time it takes depends on the programme and your research, so plan for several years of study and check each programme's regulations for minimum and maximum durations.
Finding the right department and supervisor
At doctoral level, the fit between your research interests and the department matters most. Before applying:
- Read the department's research areas and faculty members' recent publications
- Check whether the programme is taught in English or Turkish
- Make sure your research proposal matches what the department actually works on
We help you research departments and shape a clear, honest proposal in your own words. We do not write research proposals or academic work on a student's behalf.
Funding your PhD
Türkiye Scholarships accepts PhD applicants under the age of 35 with a minimum academic achievement of 75%, according to the official criteria. Benefits listed on the official website include tuition, a monthly stipend, accommodation, health insurance and a Turkish language course. Some universities also offer research or teaching assistantships and tuition waivers. See scholarships.
When to apply
Graduate schools usually announce PhD calls once or twice a year, often in spring and early summer for autumn entry. Deadlines can be short, so prepare your exam scores, references and proposal in advance.
