Many Turkish universities admit students without IELTS: their own English exam, other tests, a prep year or Turkish-taught programmes.

"Do I need IELTS to study in Turkey?" is one of the most common questions we hear from Afghan students. IELTS can be expensive, test dates may be limited, and travelling to a test centre is not always easy. The good news: many Turkish universities offer other routes. Here are the main options, and their trade-offs.

Option 1: The university's own English proficiency exam

Many Turkish universities run their own English proficiency exam for new students. If you pass it at the required level, you can start your English-taught degree directly. Some universities hold these exams online or at set dates before the semester; others hold them on campus after you arrive.

Good to know: the exam is usually only accepted by the university that runs it, and the passing score is set by that university.

Option 2: Other accepted English tests

IELTS is not the only test. Depending on the university, accepted alternatives may include TOEFL iBT and other international English tests, with minimum scores set per programme. Check each university's list of accepted tests before booking any exam.

Option 3: Admission with an English preparatory year

Many universities admit students who do not yet meet the English requirement to an English preparatory (prep) year. You study English intensively for up to a year, then begin your degree once you pass the university's proficiency exam.

Trade-off: a prep year adds a year of tuition and living costs. For many students it is still worth it, because studying a whole degree in English requires strong academic English.

Option 4: Turkish-taught programmes

If you choose a Turkish-taught programme, you do not need English for admission. Instead, you need Turkish proficiency, which most international students gain through a Turkish preparatory year before starting their degree. Turkish-taught programmes are offered at many more universities and in many more fields.

Option 5: Previous education in English

Some universities accept evidence that your previous education was taught in English instead of a test score. This is decided by each university, so check whether it applies and what proof they require.

Which route is right for you?

Your situation A sensible route
Good English, no test certificate University's own exam, or an accepted alternative test
English still developing Admission with an English prep year
Willing to study in Turkish Turkish-taught programme with a Turkish prep year
Very competitive programme (e.g. medicine) A strong recognised test score improves your options

A word of caution

Being admitted without IELTS does not mean the degree is easier. If you start an English-taught degree before your English is ready, your first year will be hard. Be honest with yourself about your level. A prep year is better than struggling through your courses.

How we help

We check each programme on your shortlist for its accepted English tests, whether it runs its own exam, and whether a prep year is likely, so you can plan your time and budget realistically. Read more about English-taught programmes in Türkiye and bachelor's admission.

Questions students ask

Can I get admission to a Turkish university without IELTS?

Often, yes. Many universities accept their own English proficiency exam or other tests, and many admit students without a score to an English preparatory year. Turkish-taught programmes do not require English at all, but need Turkish.

Do I need IELTS for the Turkish student visa?

The visa is based mainly on your acceptance letter, finances and documents. Language requirements are set by the university for admission. Follow the mission's checklist for the visa.

Is a preparatory year a waste of time?

Not necessarily. It adds a year of time and cost, but it can make your degree much easier if your English or Turkish is not yet strong.
