Checked against official sources on 26 October 2026. Requirements, fees and dates change and can differ by university, embassy or consulate. Always confirm the current rules with the official source before you apply — we do this for every student we work with.

Afghan students apply for a Turkish student visa at the Embassy of Türkiye in Kabul, after they have an acceptance letter from a Turkish university. You complete a visa pre-application online, submit your documents, and the embassy decides on your file. In our office's experience (October 2026), the Kabul embassy does not interview student visa applicants, so your documents have to explain everything for you. This guide covers the requirements, the documents, the steps, and how to prepare a file that does not leave the embassy with questions.

Step 1: Get your university acceptance first

A student visa is based on your acceptance (admission) letter from a Turkish university. Do not apply for the visa before you have it. Read the letter carefully:

  • Is the offer conditional (for example, on final grades or a language score) or unconditional?
  • Does the university ask for a tuition deposit before it issues the final letter?
  • Does the letter show your programme and its duration?

If you are still choosing universities, start with our guide on how to apply to Turkish universities from Afghanistan.

Step 2: Prepare your documents

The embassy sets the final list and can ask for more, but Afghan applicants should expect to prepare:

  1. Passport. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises at least six months' validity from your arrival date; Turkish law requires at least 60 days beyond your permitted stay. Bring old passports too, if you have them.
  2. Visa pre-application form, printed after you complete it online, with any reference number.
  3. Recent photographs in the size and style the embassy asks for.
  4. University acceptance letter, and proof of any tuition payment or deposit the university required.
  5. Proof of financial means: bank statements, or a sponsor's letter with proof of the sponsor's income and your relationship to them.
  6. Academic documents: grade 12 diploma and transcripts (or bachelor's documents for a master's), legalised and translated where required. See our translation and legalisation guide.
  7. Copy of your tazkira and any other identity documents, if requested.
  8. Health or travel insurance, if requested.
  9. The visa fee, paid as the embassy instructs.

Keep a complete set of copies and scans. Our documents checklist lists what you need for the university, the visa and registration together.

Step 3: Complete the online pre-application

The visa process starts on Türkiye's official consular portal, konsolosluk.gov.tr, which the Kabul embassy's own website links to as "visa pre-application for foreigners".

  1. Choose Afghanistan and the Embassy of Türkiye in Kabul.
  2. Choose the visa type for education.
  3. Enter your details exactly as they appear in your passport, letter by letter.
  4. Save or print the confirmation and follow the instructions it gives for submitting your file.

Use only the official websites. No person or company can sell you a guaranteed or faster appointment, and you should report anyone who claims they can.

Step 4: Submit your file

Submit your documents in person, in the way the pre-application and the embassy instruct. Bring originals and copies. Check before you leave home that every document is in the order the checklist gives and that nothing is missing.

Step 5: No interview, so your documents must answer every question

At the Kabul embassy, in our experience, student visa applicants are not interviewed. That is good news, but it changes how you should prepare. In countries where there is an interview, a student can explain a gap or a confusing document in person. In Kabul, the officer only sees your papers. Make sure they answer the questions an interviewer would ask:

An interviewer would ask… Your file should show…
Are you really admitted? The acceptance letter, and proof of any deposit the university required
Can you pay for your studies? Clear bank statements or a sponsor's letter with proof of income, not unexplained large deposits
Is this the right programme for you? Academic documents that fit the programme you chose
Are you who your documents say? The same spelling of your name and date of birth on every document
Will you follow the rules? Complete, honest documents; nothing altered

The embassy can still ask for more information or extra documents, and its practice can change. If it does, respond quickly and exactly as asked. Our guide to Turkish student visa interview questions is still useful preparation: the same questions are what your documents must answer.

Step 6: Wait for the decision

There is no fixed processing time. It depends on the season and on your file, and it is usually longest before the autumn semester, when many students apply. Practical rules:

  • Apply as soon as your acceptance letter and documents are ready.
  • Do not buy non-refundable tickets until your visa is issued.
  • Tell your university if the visa may delay your arrival, and ask about its late-arrival rules.

If you live in Pakistan or Iran

Turkish missions generally handle applications from people who live legally in the area they serve. If you live legally in Pakistan or Iran, you will usually apply to the Turkish mission there, not in Kabul. Check that mission's own requirements before you book anything.

Common reasons files are refused

  • Different spellings of your name or date of birth across passport, tazkira, diploma and translations
  • Weak financial evidence, or a sponsor letter with no proof of the sponsor's income
  • Passport validity too short for the programme
  • Missing legalisation or translation of academic documents
  • Applying with a conditional offer whose conditions are not yet met
  • Altered or false documents, which lead to refusal and can have lasting consequences. We never work with them.

After you arrive in Türkiye

A student visa lets you enter Türkiye. To stay, you must:

  1. Register at your university with your original documents.
  2. Apply for a student residence permit through e-İkamet within the period your university gives you. Many universities tell new students to apply within 30 days of arrival.
  3. Arrange health insurance, which is compulsory for the residence permit. See our health insurance guide.
  4. Apply for the high school equivalence certificate if you are a bachelor's student. See our e-Denklik guide.

Questions students ask

Does the Turkish embassy in Kabul interview student visa applicants?

In our office's experience with student visa files at the Turkish Embassy in Kabul (as of October 2026), applicants are not interviewed: the decision is made on the documents. The embassy can still ask for more information or extra documents, and its practice can change, so make sure every document is complete and consistent.

What are the Turkey student visa requirements for Afghanistan?

You need an acceptance letter from a Turkish university, a valid passport, the completed visa pre-application, photographs, proof that you can pay tuition and living costs, your academic documents (legalised and translated where required) and the visa fee. The embassy sets the final list and can ask for more.

Can Afghan students get a Turkish student visa through the e-Visa website?

No. According to Türkiye's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the e-Visa is only for tourism and commerce. Visas for study are issued by Turkish embassies and consulates, so Afghan students apply to the Turkish Embassy in Kabul, or to the Turkish mission in the country where they legally live.

How long should my passport be valid?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises at least six months' validity from your date of arrival, and Turkish law requires at least 60 days beyond your permitted stay. For a degree of several years, renew a passport that will expire soon before you apply.

What do I do after I arrive in Türkiye?

Register with your university and apply for a student residence permit through the e-İkamet system within the period your university gives you; many universities say within 30 days of arrival. Health insurance is compulsory for the residence permit.
